Hexie Dreams 13

Friday, February 25, 2022

The first stage of my Hexie Dreams quilt is finally complete! I have prepped 913 hexies – well above my original intent, but I foresee Maya having a few mini-blankets in her future:) I had decided to cut into the perfectly matching fabric kit from my aunt, after all, and then also discovered a whole stack of fabric that I forgot hadn’t fit in the other tubs. I’ve mixed them together by color below, but the kit is by Fig Tree & Co, called Mirabelle.

I was curious to see all the hexies together, so I stacked them up. It didn’t feel like all that many, to be honest. Are there really over 900 here?

And, because the next step would be to start putting them together, I had to get a sense of what the overall color scheme looked like. So, though it took a while, I sorted them into color groups, then layed them all out. This way, I could begin pulling out the ones that my eye caught on, the ones that weren’t going to match well. Too dark, too bold, too geometric, things like that. Those will be turned into mini-quilts for the cat bed. (I will probably put them together with the machine rather than by hand.) Maya got curious.

But overall, I think she approves!

The next task is to decide how to start stitching them together. Do I plan it all out, like the OCD side of me begs to do, knowing it would take me another eon to begin stitching? Do I jumble them all together and pull each hexie randomly as I go, knowing that I will forever hate parts of it that my OCD self can’t appreciate? Decisions, decisions.

Thanks! She, of course, looked away just as I took a photo.
