Giveaway Day!
I felt compelled to participate in Sew Mama Sew‘s May Giveaway Day this year. You may remember me mentioning it once upon a time when i randomly stumbled upon the glory that is is. I urge you all to check out the other bloggers participating this round, after commenting for your chance to win here, of course;)

For those of you just joining me, one of the things I enjoy making is bookcovers. So far, they are only sized for the average softcover novel (for your reference, I used the same book in all of these photos and it has 814 pages – works great on shorter novels too!). You can see some of the other ones I made here. I would love to post my pattern but after much thought I have decided that I need to work out all the kinks and I am hoping that this opportunity provided by Sew Mama Sew will allow that.
Therefore, I have decided to take a different approach to this giveaway. I have five book covers chosen, but I do not consider them completed projects. Instead, I consider them prototypes, but in truth I cant read that many books quick enough to see what the hangups are. So i am enlisting your help by kindly requesting that if you win, you report back to me with any and all your thoughts.
So here goes: the five different bookcovers, one of which very well might make it into your own hands! (Oh, not a reader yourself? Well surely you know someone who is!)
BUTTERFLY #1

This cover sports lightweight interfacing and lightweight (narrow wale) corduroy. One of the first covers I made, using my 2stitch method (see below for details). It also has a looped ribbon page marker, secured to a round shell bead. One butterfly on the front has been embroidered in a simple fashion.
BUTTERFLY #2

Identical to the first butterfly cover with two changes: A bit more stitching to secure the shell bead on the page marker and more elaborate stitching for one butterfly on the front of the cover.
BUTTERFLY #3

This cover is just like the first two except that the page marker sports sequins and beads which match the embellishment of one of the butterflies on the front cover.
SIMPLE GREY

This cover was made from a lightweight (narrow wale) corduroy with tiny embroidered flowers on it (i bought it that way), and lightweight interfacing. However, it was put together with my 4stitch method (see below for details). The page marker is a single ribbon (not looped) and does not have a finishing touch (although I did add some fray-check) – feel free to customize it with your favorite bead or button! :)
SPRING COTTON

This is the first cover I have made using quilters cotton rather than something thicker. I used a combination of lightweight and heavyweight interfacing to give it the sturdiness I feel comfortable with. It sports a few sequins and beads on the cover and spine. It also was made with my 4 stitch method. Like the Simple Grey, its page marker is unlooped and left undone (topped off with fray-check only – leave plain or add your own special touch!).
The difference between my 2 stitch and 4 stitch is simple. 2 stitch bookcovers have unfinished (raw) edges hiding under the flaps. 4 stitch bookcovers have finished edges under the flap. Both ways work quite fine for the purpose of a bookcover, and when I finally post the pattern, both options will be noted. I have simply decided that I like the extra two lines of stitching more.

And now you know what Im offering, so let the fun begin!
Five random winners from anywhere in the world will be selected from those who follow these rules:
1. Please be kind and enter only once
2. Tell me your favorite book of all time or favorite author (and anything else youd like to say;)
3. You must include a way for me to contact you
4. By commenting, you agree to provide me feedback on your thoughts and how well the cover endures (and also to not steal the pattern for commercial use!) Simple things like : Did the stitching hold? Was the interfacing too stiff? Did anything about it annoy you? Etc etc. Honest answers for an honest crafter.
This giveaway is open until 11:59pm central time on May 20th and I will ship internationally so anyone can participate. I will then select five commenters randomly and announce the winners and ship the prizes by May 24th. I moderate comments (shame on spammers!), so dont worry if you do not see them post right away – they will still post in the order commented:)
Good luck and huzzah! :D

My favorite book for years was the Tombs of Atuan by Ursula Leguin. As of late I am not sure, honestly…I still love that book though.

I’m a lover of many books but in the spirit of crafting my favourite inspiration comes from a book written in the 70s by a woman called Edith Schaeffer the title is ‘Hidden Art’ and it is about inspiring the creative in all of us as a response to the creator’s fingerprint in us all. I love your covers and I would be thrilled to read anyu book with such a lovely cover!

That is a fantastic idea, who would not want to read a book with such a lovely cover on it! I love reading and usually pick up my books from the library. I don’t have a favorite book but I love historical novels where the story has been based around actual fact. Phillipa Gregory writes good stories and Con Iggulden is brilliant at a historical novel. email jenni@skea.com

My favourite book of all time is Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. I’ve read it at least once a year for the past 15 years… Usually more often. And every single time I feel the same wildly fluctuating range of emotions — hope, despair, resignation, passion… I think it’s time to get it down from the shelf again. :)

It is sooo hard to choose my absolute favourite book of all time, so I will tell you one of my favourites. It’s “A Painted House” by John Grisham. Not his usual style of writing, but he’s so darn good at it he should try more in this style. I was so sad when I finished reading it.

However, there a limited number of those so I fill the vast void with books like the “Odd Thomas” series by Dean Koontz, “Eragon” series, “Harry Potter” series. I tend to find a write I like and read that person’s books until I have exhausted their writings or I get bored with their style.

I love AA Milne and the Winnie the Pooh stories. I know it might sound a bit naff but whenever I hear them they remind me of winter evenings sitting on my Grandads knee as he read them aloud to me. He has been gone for nearly 30 years but I can still hear his voice!

What a coincidence! I just checked out a book from the library on how to make book covers. I have lots of fabric scraps that would lend themselves to book covers. Yours are particularly pretty, with their extra details and embroidery. I would love to be your guinea pig and report back on how they wear. I read a LOT and any cover will get a real workout. I know how important feedback is and would be happy to give you my honest opinion.
My favorite book of all time is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. The heroines experiences practically mirror my life as a foreigner in Japan. I just nod in agreement throughout the entire book! (And once you read Outlander, you will have to read the rest of the series. That will keep you busy for awhile!)

i love your book covers. i read A LOT. i’m a proof reader during the day, the daughter of a librarian and an avid reader in my free time. i love really big books, because the small ones don’t last a day, that’s how fast i read.
so this bookcover would be very appreciated and i know that i’m only one in hundred of participants, but i had to try my luck. i really love the butterflies and the spring cottong. they are adorable!!! i would give you all the feedback you would require, that’s always the best way to improve our work, after all.
my favourite book of all times is “one hundred years of solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. there is also a great portuguese book called “Os Maias”, by Eca de Queiroz, which is my favourite portuguese book of all times. yes, i’m from Portugal. :)
more recently, i discovered that i like Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga books, which was totally unexpected because vampires are so not my thing, but go figure!

These are so perfect! I hope you can get the feedback you’re looking for. I don’t have a favorite book. It always depends on my mood. Currently I’ve been reading vampire books simply because I have two little ones that take a lot of brain power from me and so I appreciate an easy read. Especially since my reading time tends to be late at night.
I generally don’t win things but wanted to suggest maybe leaving off the embellishments on the actual covers. I know that I do most of my reading while in bed and it seems like they would make the experience slightly uncomfortable??? They are adorable though!
I also think it would very cool if you could somehow attach a handle to it so it could be like a mini purse.

My favorite book is It by Stephen King – I read it when I was 14 or so and reread it again a few years ago – still love it.

I love your book covers and love reading but it’s hard to choose a favourite book so I’ll go with Margaret Atwood as my favourite author

Loved reading everyone’s book/author favorites. My all-time fave is Pride & Prejudice but a more recent (and very different) favorite is the series by Steig Larsson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, etc.). Thanks for the chance to win.

I (and my father, believe it or not) loved Georgette Heyer’s regency romances. To this day, if I am at the library, and I find something similar, it goes straight into my book bag for me to read.

It is so hard to have to pick a favorite book or writer, I swear I haven’t met a book I didn’t like. Really! Favorite catagories are scifi, horror, and craft.

What a cute Idea! I would love a fun and funky bookcover. I think that my favorite is the first one with the very simple embroiery. It reminds me of anthropologie!
My favorite book of all time is a three way tie: Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice and Little Women. I read them all every year and still LOVE each and every one!
Fun blog! Thanks for the giveaway and I am glad I found your little corner of the web!

My favorite book is my Exquisite Pain book by Sophie Calle. It’s a small and intimate book, and it’s by one of my favorite artists. My favorite author though would be Chuck Palanuik.
I am fond of the design of the second butterfly book :)

Oh man… favorite book. I’ve been reading a lot of stuff lately and it’s hard to rate those against old favorites of mine. My favorite book looking back is probably Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut. My favorite book from within the last 3 years though is probably The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
As far as favorite author goes I’d have to lean to Philip K Dick… not everything he’s written has been wonderful but it’s just about all interesting… and Ubik sticks with me.
This sentence is just to make the already too long post even longer.
:)
