nyny begins with a bag

I am so happy with myself! I actually got a travel bag purse thingie sewed up in all its cuteness today! It took me about 8 hours (not to mention the time to cut it while babysitting yesterday, nor the few hours it took when i whipped out a prototype from some gifted material). Considering I have never made a bag, never used piping, and had added all kinds of features to a pattern I found, well gosh golly darnit, 8 hours is pretty quick!

I found the pattern at IS*LY, through a quick google image search for a purse pattern. It looked like the perfect size for all my gear (novel, dsi, ipod and headphones, camera, card wallet, cash wallet, coin purse, phone, sunglasses, notebook, keys, and the most important – chapstick!).

However, i adapted it a bit because I had a bag that fit all that in it already, but it was just that – a bag. For the comfort of the airplane and travel, I wanted pockets, so I made a little bag that fits inside the bigger bag, then sewed it up at the corners for a total of five perfectly sized pockets.

I added magnetic enclosures and made the handles just long enough so that the bulk sits at my waist. Honestly, i expected to blog about my giant failures with this one, especially because i was in a time crunch and rushing, but even on the prototype, I didnt have many blunders. Okay, the occasional sew-rip sew-rip event did occur, but seriously I am gushing with pride over this. *And* its even outside my comfort zone for colors. I must like it a lot!

I leave tomorrow so I may or may not be posting “soon” about my venture to the Big Apple. Toodles! :)

almost!

Charlottes gift is ready! Like, for real this time. I solved the last problem with a little bit of yarn and it should work great. It WILL be out on delivery today, heavens help me. But, the giftedness of it means no photos for you yet. Here is the package though – I hadnt intended on making it cute, but it just kind of happened:

Meanwhile, although all the problems of it had killed my desire to create (really it was a matter of: If i move on to something else, i will never come back to it), I have accumulated quite a stack of projects.

1. a belated birthday purse

2. a kindle kase

3. a *leather* bookcover

4. little night gowns for my uber small neice

5. a travel purse for me, with pockets for all my goods

That last was suppose to be done before my big NY trip next week, but I dont see that happening :(

(Did i mention my big NY trip? My bro wanted me to visit but I told him i was a poor broke no-longer-college-kid, so he offered the tix as my bday present! Woot!)

Oh and the cats are gone (the hairless ones). My girls are so relaxed now, although the first day after, I think Sasha was incredibly bored because she meowed most of the day (we are talking like 80% of the day instead of 50%). By the end of the week, they were still NOT friends, but Maya took a few naps with Cocoa (and sometimes even Jinx), and Sasha gave up hissing and swatting at every opportunity. But she did follow them incessantly and kept them off her condo. Except for this day (blurry phone pic, sorry):

As return, I was gifted a beautiful quilted blanket. Stunning, actually!!

beadwork and leather

One of my teachers was able to make it to my graduation beach party that boy threw for me (hooray for all the monkeys, boo for lack of parking!).

She makes Native American inspired crafts so she made me a beautiful pouch from teal suede leather, and created a beaded rosette for it. Its so soft! I havent decided what Im going to keep in it yet, but itll be something good:)

She also made a little ornament type thing for package decoration.

You can check out what else she makes at Past, Present, and Future. I also received a catalog from Crazy Crow! They sell all kinds of things for historic crafts – from leathers, stones, and metals to knives, books, and dvds.
