SMS Giveaway Winners!

I may be hanging out in NYC and all, but my feet and I are having a bit of a respite at my bro’s apartment so I can take the time to announce the lucky winners!

For those of you who did not win, remember to check back here soon (after our NYC trip and I am home) for the tutorial on how to make a cover for yourself:)

Boy worked his techno-guru magic to randomly select the winners. I’ve pruned the output for ease of read and they are:

| Eileen | 2011-05-25 01:56:14 | I would love to meet August from “A Secret Life of Bees”! The book is so rich and delicious, I never wanted it to end! It’s my favorite! I love the Embroidery Experiment cover! It’s gorgeous!

| Maria | 2011-05-24 08:22:30 | I would like to meet Alice from Alice in Wonderland to see the world again through children’s eyes. I really like the embroided cover! Thanks for the nice giveaway!

| Stephanie | 2011-05-25 15:12:13 | Thank you for the great giveaway. I would like to see the characters from Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon in real life.

| Liz | 2011-05-23 22:28:10 | Its really silly but I’d love to meet Eric from the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris because I just love his character in the books…so sexy.  In real life though I’d be freakin’ terrified by any vampire (if they were real)…whether hot and sexy or not. I love all the book covers so if I win no worries about which one.

Emails have been sent out to you but if I do not hear from you before I roll out of bed on Sunday morning, I will select another. Nothing against you, just wanting to keep in line with the SMS policy of shipping out by the 30th if I can.

I also was surprised to discover that the main theme of characters selected was not what I had hypothesized! I didn’t run any stats but it seems like most of you would want to meet someone to be your friend above any other kind of character. Second to that is someone wise. I had expected Mr. Darcy and the like to be higher on the scale so you surprised me! Choosing a character is hard, especially if I must pick only one. I can think of many for different reasons. Some to befriend, some for amour (in another life of course;), some to protect. But I think ultimately it would be a certain historian from Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian. What a wealth of knowledge! Of course, I would come prepared…

Thanks for playing, and thank you Sew Mama Sew for another cool internet community event :)

SMS Giveaway Day!

************Comments are now closed!!************

I will tally it up and then post the winners soon! :D

Thank you guys so much for your interest :D

**************************************************

This week begins Sew Mama Sew’s May Giveaway Day, and I am happy to once again participate!

This round, I am giving away 4 book covers which fit the standard Mass Market size paperbacks. You know, the short fat ones that are about 4.25 x 6.75 inches.

The first (and thus far only other) time I participated, I had asked for everyone’s favorite author or book. The literary winner was Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice for those interested.

I had also asked the winners last time to give me their thoughts on the product since I was still working out the pattern. Since then, I have worked it out and am now at the stage of experimenting with the embellishments. If only there were more weekends in the week, eh?

This round all I ask from you is to be kind and only leave one comment. Please include:

  • What character would you love to meet in real life and why?
(Name the book and author of course;)
  • Which cover would you prefer?
(Although in the case of ties, I will choose randomly.)
  • Your email address
(It is ok to disguise it such as:  calynn ((at)) thecrafties ((dot)) com)

Side note: If you are having trouble finding the Comments link (look up top, under the date), then click on the title and scroll to the bottom. (This theme still has a few quirks, and for that I apologize.) Comments are moderated so it may take a while for yours to appear, what with work and a NYC trip and all, but they will be tallied in order, this I promise you:)

Comments will be closed around midnight Eastern time on Wednesday, May 25th. The four international winners will be chosen at random and I will ship the covers out by the end of the month. I will email each at the close of the giveaway for the mailing information but if I do not hear from them by Saturday, May 28th, I will select another random winner instead.

Also, check back soon after the winners have been announced for the tutorial! Yes, finally! :D

Good luck and huzzah!

SMS Giveaway Day approaches!

I just signed up for the next give away day : May 23rd. Yippee! :D

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Hop on over here and check it out: Sew Mama Sew! May Giveaway Day

(How my first giveaway day went: Giveaway Day! )

Maybe that will prompt me to forget about the house remodelling and pry myself away from the darling little stray kitty and craft again!

Oh, and something I never did get around to sharing – I won something from Made By Rae in December!! Check it: Falalalafabric Giveaway Winners (#7 :) That is unrelated to Sew Mama Sew’s thing but still, giveaways rock! I have not used the fabric yet, but I do have plans. It was even cuter in person:)

Gosh, I also forgot to share that I won something from WorldBuilders! Each year author Patrick Rothfuss is a part of this thing through Heifer International. Or maybe its Heifer International through WorldBuilders. Well, whatever the case, for every donation you make, they match it. How amazing is that?! And what Mr. Rothfuss does in addition to that is that he organizes a type of giveaway himself. For every 10$ increment you donate, you are entered to win all kinds of cool stuff. Like I can’t even tell you the amount of awesomeness that goes into this. And for such a great cause! I won a signed copy even! When I finish it, I’ll declare but for now reading has gone on the wayside :(

Stuff without photos.

Computer news: The power adapter for my laptop snapped in two and the battery is officially dead now. I have some posts to make but the computers i have available arent my flavor – they are a little too much on the unix side to deal with photo editing and such, if you know what i mean. Im a simple girl. I like my mainstream, pretty-looking programs:P (Boy has ever so graciously provided his itty bitty KDE laptop, and something called Fluxbox – one without a full size screen and one without a full size keyboard. Ugh. Its silly isnt it? Computer dudes spend so much time building the most powerful machines and then they stick these near useless baby keyboards or monitors on them. It reminds me of body builders with pin heads.)

Fun news: I am THRILLED that i won a Sew Mama Sew December Giveaway! I entered Made By Rae’s Falalalafabric Giveaway and scored the Pink Kelp! Yay! She was also kind enough to post all the winners photos up so you can see what we made with her patterns or inspirations.

Cat news: Although Sashas gingivitis is under control with the simple treatment of the rinse she completely detests, her front gum still looked really horrible and her top second incisor tooth was hanging out so she always walked around with her tongue out. She otherwise acted normal and ate fine but we finally decided to take her in. The doc said it was an absorptive lesion which is common for the front teeth and pulled it right out with barely a wince from her. (He let me keep it since i do love bones and teeth and it is so teeny weeny!) That evening we noticed the tooth next to the missing one now was crooked, as if the only thing that had kept it in place was being wedged by the missing tooth. About three days later, it looked horrible and moving all around and this time i could tell she was in a bit of pain (if not a whole heck of a lot of it). Boy and i held her down like the doc and his staff did and she didnt even flinch or nothing when we pulled it out (holiday time = no vet hours). Nothing at all! My fears of being a torturous cat mom was laid to rest. It was amazing. (And an even tinier tooth!) And just the next day, all the redness was gone and she is back to her old self. Happy cat!

Kitchen news: I dont really have much to say. All the electrical is finished and we have canned lighting now, yay! Boys dad and uncle did that for us on Christmas Eve, of all days. Boy and i just need to make sure all the nails are gone for the drywall people, get a few more rolls of insulation, and then get the stove and sink/dishwasher out of there again. We are dillydallying a bit on that last part. As much as we are sick of this whole process, going back to paper plates and microwaved food just isnt appetizing, but of course its also because last weekend and this weekend are holiday weekends. Even weekend warriors need a break. Oh, and i have made the executive decision to take out the “linen closet” around the bend from the wall we had the contractors work on because it really doesnt hold a folded towel well at all (its not deep enough). Instead, I am going to make it a built-in book case with cabinet storage on the bottom. Im pretty psyched about that idea. I dunno why.

I hope your holidays were/are fun and not met with busted technology!

100th Post Special

This post isnt what I had intended to post for my 100th post special, but I felt it was special enough, if not even more special than my original intention.

Two friends and I participated in Iraqi Bundles of Love this year, otherwise known as IBOL. To sum it up, a military man who grew up in a family of quilters and married a quilter, and therefore always surrounded by crafting, was stationed in Iraq when he saw a desperate need for sewing supplies. As we all know, Iraq has been through so much strife for such a long time that it doesnt take much imagination to see how sewing fell to the bottom of the economic priorities. While there are many other kinds of donations that could be done, this one really felt right with me because I feel it symbolizes a desire for unity, one crafter to another, no matter where in the world we live.

The three of us were really excited about

Giveaway Winners! Woo!

I had Boy work his magic with the sql database to come up with the winners so i wouldnt have to count my way through the comments. Thanks for being so smart, Boy! :)

The printed results are ugly strings of characters so Ill shorten them for you:

mysql> select * from wp_comments where comment_post_ID = 1345 order by rand() limit 5;

| comment_author | comment_date_gmt  | comment_content

| Sara | 2010-05-19 21:56:07 | I love Harry Potter and The Good Earth.

| Beth | 2010-05-18 08:06:44 | Beautiful! My favorite book of all time is The Stand by Stephen King. Thank you for the giveaway!

| Caroline | 2010-05-17 19:29:05 | Oh they’re gorgeous! I would love the chance to offer you feedback ;-)My favourite author would have to be Roald Dahl. I re-read Matilda so many times as a kid.

| Nadescha| 2010-05-17 09:04:44 | my absolutely favourite author is diana gabaldon – i am currently on book 7 (an echo in the bone) of her epic historical love story between jamie and claire fraser. i wish they could live forever… :-)

| Sarah | 2010-05-17 10:23:26 | Love the butterfly cover. My favourite book for a long time was Bridge to Terabithia {long before it was a movie!} For my adult life I would say Coming Through Slaughter by Michael Ondaatje.{anything by Michael is worth reading more than once, in my humble opinion} Also Alice Munro! Thanks for the chance.

Congratulations you guys! Im so excited that my covers are being shipped all over the world – that amazes me. Yay!

And again, thank you ALL for participating. Considering it seems you really liked the idea of a bookcover, I am definitely going to experiment more with them. Ive had quite a few sketches drawn up for a while and its time i get to work!

Giveaway End!

Well, gosh golly gees!

I had no idea how resounding the turn out would be; you all made me blush:) I want to thank Sew Mama Sew for this opportunity and a HUGE Thank You So Very Much to you all for leaving me so many comments!

I was given around 400 different favorites which will really help me choose new books! If you were wondering who the most popular choice is (yes, i have a spreadsheet going like any proper dork would), Jane Austen tops the charts, and Pride and Prejudice is her most favored.

I suggest to you guys my own favorite author: Guy Gavriel Kay. The Fionavar Tapestry is my all time favorite, but I also recommend Tigana, A Song for Arbonne, or The Lions of Al-Rassan. But hes not for everyone, and this I know (although i dont quite understand;).

I also added you guys to my RSS feed so i can check out your sites when I have the time – count me as a follower!

Good luck on all the contests you entered, and I will announce the five winners sometime today:)

Giveaway Day!

I felt compelled to participate in Sew Mama Sew‘s May Giveaway Day this year. You may remember me mentioning it once upon a time when i randomly stumbled upon the glory that is is. I urge you all to check out the other bloggers participating this round, after commenting for your chance to win here, of course;)

For those of you just joining me, one of the things I enjoy making is bookcovers. So far, they are only sized for the average softcover novel (for your reference, I used the same book in all of these photos and it has 814 pages – works great on shorter novels too!). You can see some of the other ones I made here. I would love to post my pattern but after much thought I have decided that I need to work out all the kinks and I am hoping that this opportunity provided by Sew Mama Sew will allow that.

Therefore, I have decided to take a different approach to this giveaway.
